Summary for: Water softening
In this application, ion-exchange resins are used to replace the magnesium and calcium ions found in hard water with sodium ions. When the resin is fresh, it contains sodium ions at its active sites. When in contact with a solution containing magnesium and calcium ions (but a low concentration of sodium ions), the magnesium and calcium ions preferentially migrate out of solution to the active sites on the resin, being replaced in solution by sodium ions. This process reaches equilibrium with a much lower concentration of magnesium and calcium ions in solution than was started with.

The resin can be recharged by washing it with a solution containing a high concentration of sodium ions (e.g. it has large amounts of common salt (NaCl) dissolved in it). The calcium and magnesium ions migrate from the resin, being replaced by sodium ions from the solution until a new equilibrium is reached. The salt is used to recharge an ion-exchange resin, which itself is used to soften the water.
Cation-exchange resin
Cation exchange method removes the hardness of water but induces acidity in it. Which is further removed in next stage of treatment of water by passing this acidic water through anion exchange process Formula: R−H acidic
Reaction: R−H + M+ = R-M+ + H+.

Coagulation is often the first step in water treatment. During coagulation, chemicals with a positive charge are added to the water. The positive charge neutralizes the negative charge of dirt and other dissolved particles in the water. When this occurs, the particles bind with the chemicals to form slightly larger particles. Common chemicals used in this step include specific types of salts, aluminum, or iron.
FlocculationFlocculation follows the coagulation step. Flocculation is the gentle mixing of the water to form larger, heavier particles called flocs. Often, water treatment plants will add additional chemicals during this step to help the flocs form.
SedimentationSedimentation is one of the steps water treatment plants use to separate out solids from the water. During sedimentation, flocs settle to the bottom of the water because they are heavier than water.
FiltrationOnce the flocs have settled to the bottom of the water, the clear water on top is filtered to separate additional solids from the water. During filtration, the clear water passes through filters that have different pore sizes and are made of different materials (such as sand, gravel, and charcoal). These filters remove dissolved particles and germs, such as dust, chemicals, parasites, bacteria, and viruses. Activated carbon filters also remove any bad odors.
Water treatment plants can use a process called ultrafiltration in addition to or instead of traditional filtration. During ultrafiltration, the water goes through a filter membrane with very small pores. This filter only lets through water and other small molecules (such as salts and tiny, charged molecules).
Reverse osmosisexternal icon is another filtration method that removes additional particles from water. Water treatment plants often use reverse osmosis when treating recycled waterexternal icon (also called reused water) or salt water for drinking.
DisinfectionAfter the water has been filtered, water treatment plants may add one or more chemical disinfectants (such as chlorine, chloramine, or chlorine dioxide) to kill any remaining parasites, bacteria, or viruses. To help keep water safe as it travels to homes and businesses, water treatment plants will make sure the water has low levels of the chemical disinfectant when it leaves the treatment plant. This remaining disinfectant kills germs living in the pipes between the water treatment plant and your tap.
In addition to or instead of adding chlorine, chloramine, or chlorine dioxide, water treatment plants can also disinfect water using ultraviolet (UV) light pdf icon[PDF – 7 pages]external icon or ozone pdf icon[PDF – 7 pages]external icon. UV light and ozone work well to disinfect water in the treatment plant, but these disinfection methods do not continue killing germs as water travels through the pipes between the treatment plant and your tap.

Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium, and certain other metal cations in hard water. The resulting soft water requires less soap for the same cleaning effort, as soap is not wasted bonding with calcium ions. Soft water also extends the lifetime of plumbing by reducing or eliminating scale build-up in pipes and fittings. The etymology of water softeners comes from how people used to wash their clothes. When washing in the rivers or other natural water sources, people used to use "soft water" or water collected from rainfall, as a final rinse for their clothing. This would result in their clothes being softer due to the final rinse, as the natural water cycle naturally softens water through evaporation. The name was chosen for marketing purposes by the Culligan company to conjure the public's understanding of how rainwater and other soft water supplies are used.

Water Softening Plants -Operating Principle
The Water Softeners are charged with a high capacity polystyrene bead cation exchange resin in sodium form. When hard water passes through this resin column, the hardness forming calcium and magnesium salts are replaced with sodium salts which do not posses any hardness properties. This softening process is continuous until the material is exhausted of sodium salts when it is regenerated with a solution of common salt.
The Water Softener units are designed on the advanced Co current/counter-current principle that ensures consistent good quality treated water.
A typical water softening Plant consists of pre-filters, Water Softener Vessel with Resin, Brine Tank, and accessories.
The Water Softener units are available in a wide range of materials like FRP / LDPE / MS /MS Rubber Lined / Stainless Steel.
These Water Softeners come with Multiport Valves/ Diaphragm Valves and designed to give long trouble free service. These Water Softener units are easy to install and does not require any special foundation & needs minimum maintenance.
